Enjoy... the Lion City!
Braunschweig, to the English-speaking world known as Brunswick, is located in the heart of Germany. With over 245,000 inhabitants it is the biggest city in the area between Hanover and Berlin. It is situated in the federal state of Lower Saxony, north of the Harz Mountains on the river Oker.
Braunschweig’s history is closely linked to the Guelph Henry the Lion and his son Otto IV, who was the first and only Guelph emperor. Henry the Lion made Braunschweig his residence in the middle of the 12th century. For centuries his lion, in form of a bronze statue, has stood on the Castle Square in the city centre. It serves as a reminder of his power and is still the heraldic sign of the city.
The attractive profile of the city is due to its rich and proud history, its ongoing development as a dynamic place for business, trading, sciences, and research, as well as its extensive cultural activities.
